Nick Turvey

Nick Turvey graduated in 2006 with an MA from the Royal College of Art in London. Since then he has exhibited his sculpture internationally, and won a number of large public commissions. In 2008 he received a bursary from the Royal British Society of Sculptors, in 2009 an award from Arts Council England, and in 2010 the Brian Mercer Award for Stonecarving. He had a one-man show at the Gibberd Gallery ‘All Alone Together’ 19.6 – 24.8.13, which was an installation of three ‘bunkers’, constructed by and used by the community. Offered on loan for ten years to the Art Trust, ‘Chief’ by Nick Turvey can be appreciated in the round, making its form dynamic for the viewer. It was acquired through the efforts of the Art Trust and the Council. Born in Bow 1958.Attended Camberwell School of Art, then Wimbledon 1991-3 and achieved his MAFA in Public Art from Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 1995.His works are often done in collaboration with architects and engineers and are site specific. He uses bronze, steel and LED lighting. He has exhibited in Ireland, UK, Czech Republic and Canada. Stallard lives and works in Coggershall,Essex. Answering a post on Axisweb he was commissioned in November 2011 for a permanent structure for the back wall of the Playhouse, Harlow. Made of steel and pulsating LED lights it depicts a harlequin entering through the wall into the theatre, he describes it as ‘entering in an ethereal way,as a reflection of the theatre and its relationship with its public – both now and of its past.’The title ‘Ghost in the Machine’ may refer to the title of Arthur Koestler’s book about mind/body relations. Stallard work sometimes reflects the spiritual. There is also an album entitled this by Police and a detective series. Paul Mason

1952-2006 Mason was born in Bolton in 1952. He studied at Bolton College of Art and Design, Wolverhampton Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools. He won the Royal Academy Gold Medal in 1976. In 2002, he completed a major commission of six sculptures along the East Yar River on the Isle of Wight. Mason died in 2006. Works VertexDove grey Bardolino marble from Carrara 1979 76x76x213 cmBroad Walk, Harlow With the assistance of an Arts Council of Great Britain grant the Trust provided Mason with his first major commission in 1979. Mason visited Pisani’s stone yard in Matlock where, ambitiously, he selected a three ton block of marble for carving by hand. It took him over twelve months to complete the piece. Sculptors in the early stages of their career who get offered public commissions want to showcase their talents, as future commission will depend on the first. Mason describes his ambitions as ‘a rite of passage’. He didn’t quite envisage the effort involved in making Vertex. Diane Maclean

Born 1939 London, parents Scottish. 1956-9 studied modern languages at University College, London. 1980-5 studied art at Hertfordshire College of Art & Design. Initial works in wood and stone, specialising in large outdoor pieces. Since then mainly working in coloured steel from her home in St Albans. She has works at University of Surrey (Triple Ripple), Jesus College, Cambridge, and Keele University; also at Chelmer Valley Park and Ride, Essex, her sculpture is mainly based in the Home Counties. Working as an environmental artist she produced a night time walk with Malcolm Innes and music by Bob Pegg and natural sounds for the Scottish Forestry Commission. She exhibited a work called Open Book, a large steel diptych, on the Promenade at Fitzwilliam,Cambridge 2008,inspired by a Gaelic translation. In June 2014 Open Book was gifted and unveiled by Her Majesty the Queen on her state visit to France with President Hollande. Inscribed “An open book we are writing together”. Robert Koenig

Koenig was born in Manchester in 1951 and is of Polish descent. He studied Fine Art at Brighton Polytechnic then the Slade and became an Associate of the Royal British Society of Sculptors.In 1982 he was resident sculptor in Grizedale Forest, Cumbria. He is recognised for his use of wood.In 1996 he won a competition to commemorate the coal miners and steel workers of Bilston.He has exhibited and sold work internationally from London, Poland and China. He works mainly in wood, carving, painting and printing on it. His output is diverse from portraiture to furniture for interior and exterior settings. He runs workshops, many school based. Sited in February 2015 in the Civic Centre foyer is the sculpture Moongate on loan from County Hall Chelmsford to the Art Trust. The work is part of a series commissioned by Chelmsford in 2009 to celebrate the county’s association with Jiangsu Province, China. After visiting China, Davey produced six pieces relating to its temples, gardens and customs. This piece is inspired by garden entrances; the idea of inner and outer spaces and the passage from the real to the imaginary. The subdued colours of red, blue and yellow transform the metal structure into a more organic surface softening the angularity and curve of the circle and leading down to the square wooden plinth which is open grained and cracked. Grenville Davey won the Turner Prize in 1992 and is now a Professor at the University of East London. He lives and works in Great Yeldham and in 2012 made a work called Inter Alia (between things) a ninety metre long wall for the Queen Elizabeth Gardens in the Olympic Park. 1910-1994, and 1912-1974 Henry and Joyce (Pallot) married in 1938 after meeting at Colchester School of Art in 1932. They worked collaboratively on over sixty projects. !n 1951 they produced a mural for the Sea and Ships Pavilion for the Central Office of Information at the Festival of Britain. Clients include Sainsbury’s, BHS, Shell and the GPO, Ind Coope Ltd and Essex County Council. Murals based on the cityscapes in Stockport and Newcastle BHS stores similar to ours were produced. Harlow Relief in wood, plywood and string 1982 224cm x 732 cm British Home Stores, First Floor, Town Centre Process using moulds (early works were in concrete into plastic, which was broken open, then substituted for wooden moulds from which the mural could be released so the formwork could be reused). With the closure of the BHS, group access to the mural is no longer available. Its future is being debated as it is not under the Trust’s remit. All BHS stores had been closed by August 2016.

Jonathan Clarke was born in 1961 in Suffolk, UK, where he continues to work today. At the age of 16 he took up an apprenticeship with his father, the sculptor Geoffrey Clarke (RA), and he began exhibiting his own sculpture in the early 1980s.Jonathan works in sand-cast aluminium, initially carving his sculpture in polystyrene. This method – pioneered by his father and mastered by Jonathan – relies on the destruction of the original mould as it is vaporised by molten aluminium. The result is an entirely unique, one-off sculpture.Writing about Jonathan’s first solo show (Chappel Galleries, 1993), Galleries magazine noted his ‘line of inheritance from the masters of the century, from Gabo, through Moore, to Paolozzi.’ His style, whilst abstract and architectural, carries a great deal of emotional resonance, often taking inspiration from social, spiritual and mythological subject matter.
